The recipient of the Grayson County Medical School Scholarship was announced on Friday, June 2, 2023. The scholarship award was made possible through a partnership between the Grayson County Healthcare Foundation, Owensboro Health Foundation, and Owensboro Health, Inc.
Through the generous gift of an anonymous donor, William Bret Crawford has received a scholarship award of up to $200,000 to pay for medical school expenses. After graduation, Crawford will join an Owensboro Health primary care, family medicine or internal medicine practice in Grayson County.
Crawford is a Grayson County High School graduate and is now currently enrolled in medical school at Pikeville. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Campbellsville University, where he was also a member of the Cross Country Team.
“One focus of the Grayson County Healthcare Foundation is to assure access to care for Grayson County residents,” said Executive Director Brittany Clemons. “This scholarship opportunity will assist Mr. Crawford in obtaining his education so that he can come back and serve his community, while also improving availability of healthcare for community members. The Grayson County Healthcare Foundation is proud to be involved in meeting the healthcare needs of Grayson County.”
In addition to residency and education requirements, applicants had to submit a personal statement describing their interest in the medical field and career plans, two letters of recommendation and transcripts of grades. Applications were evaluated on the following:
- Academic performance and achievement
- Intellectual, civic, and personal interests
- Demonstrated leadership, personal qualities, and reported character
- Unique life experiences that may contribute to a medical career
- Motivation for medicine
- Communication skills
