Grayson County Healthcare Foundation to Donate 10 acres to City of Leitchfield for Recreational Facility

The Grayson County Healthcare Foundation (GCHF) wishes to announce an agreement to donate 10.4 acres of property to the City of Leitchfield for the building of a multipurpose facility. It is the intent of the City of Leitchfield to build an approximate 50,000 square foot facility for sports and recreational purposes. The facility will also be utilized for meetings, trade shows, and educational functions. The land is located on East Carroll Gibson Boulevard, across from the Leitchfield Aquatic Center and Elizabethtown Community & Technical College’s Leitchfield Campus.

The mission of the GCHF is to preserve and enhance long-term health and wellness through the support and advocacy of programs, institutions and facilities that improve health. The GCHF Board of Directors believes supporting a project aimed at engaging community members in physical activity works to fulfill that mission. “Our Foundation is thrilled to support this project and see it come to fruition,” said Brittany Clemons, GCHF Executive Director. “A recreational facility would bring so many benefits to our community, particularly from a health and wellness standpoint.”

Owensboro Health, upon purchasing the former Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center, possesses Right of First Refusal on the site proposed for the recreational facility. This gives Owensboro Health the option to match any offer for the property. In support of bringing this resource to the Grayson County community, Owensboro Health has relinquished their right to purchase the property so that it could be donated to the City of Leitchfield for the project.

The facility is currently in the planning stages. Basketball courts, volleyball courts and a walking track are among some of the amenities planned for the facility. The City of Leitchfield will attempt to obtain funding for the facility from multiple sources including federal, state, and local government, grants, and the private sector. City of Leitchfield Mayor Harold Miller supports the project and said, “A recreational facility will be a major asset to the city and the county.”
